Retirement Benefits Group Adds Advisor to Irvine Office
Phil Matheson joins RBG from Centennial Group Benefits

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 16, 2016 – A retirement plan specialist who was key to helping increase plan revenue at his previous firm, has joined Retirement Benefits Group’s Irvine, California, office, as a managing director.

Phil Matheson, a financial advisor with a total of 10 years of experience, oversaw the addition of more than 80 small- and mid-market plans, for a total of 93 plans as head of the retirement division at Centennial Group Benefits. Though he found much success at his previous firm, Matheson joined RBG knowing that his current clients would be able to reap the benefits of the resources of a well-established firm and its broker-dealer, LPL Financial.

As he grows his business, Matheson expects having the brand recognition of RBG and LPL behind him will enable him to add retirement plans of all sizes to his client base.

And, with the coming changes to the industry that will be ushered in with the implementation of the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule, Matheson believes RBG’s support system and his access to seasoned retirement plan specialists will help him to thrive as an independent advisor.

“I see myself as an extension to my clients’ HR teams,” Matheson said. “I work with them to improve the performance of their plans through customized plan design ideas, fee benchmarking, industry benchmarking and creative education programs.”

Prior to Centennial Group, Matheson was a financial advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors and Wachovia Securities.

When selecting his new firm, Matheson decided on RBG because it offered full independence with a strong focus on client outcomes.

“In the new fiduciary environment, I expect that firms with the RBG business model, with its strong focus on retirement plans, will thrive,” he said. “Now that I have joined RBG, I can say with confidence to HR directors and CFOs of companies large and small that I have a strong team of professionals working with me at RBG and LPL to assist their employees with their retirement planning needs. I am especially excited to bring LPL Worksite Financial Solutions* to my plan participants, which allows them to access tools and resources designed to help simplify retirement planning.”

Michael Castner, a principal at RBG, said, “We are very happy to have Phil onboard with us. He is a great asset to our team and we are excited to partner with someone of Phil’s caliber and experience.”

Matheson holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC®) certifications and has completed studies through the University of California, Irvine toward a Certified Financial Planning (CFP®) designation. He is a member of the University of Arizona Alumni Association and the Sigma Chi Orange County Chapter.
